BOATS
We partnered with the PT Wooden Boat Festival to add questions to their boat show application this year. We learned about the innovative actions and plans to decarbonize and detoxify their worlds.
Boat Name: Clean Bay - Built by the NW School of Wooden Boatbuilding, inspired by Kevin Ritz, Systems Instructor. The 25' electric power pump-out boat plans to work Port Townsend Bay. It’s main propulsion is a Torqueedo 10.0 FP pod drive even posers a bow thruster, with 20kW battery bank.
Boat Name: Electric Philosophy - Built by Devlin Designing Boat Builders for Edward & Eileen Pauley. This unique, one-off 42' Catamaran is a fully solar-powered electric boat. All house and propulsion systems are powered by the sun using LiFePO4 batteries.
Boat Name: Epic - Built by the Community Boat Project by a crew led by Nahja Chimneti. The new, wood 33' Schooner requires no fuel, using only wind (and oars for harbors) is a very carbon friendly boat.
Boat Name: Galileo - James Jones commissioned this 19' Eco 55, built by Bernard Kohler. It is electric powered using solar panels.
Boat Name: Katie M - Retrofitted by Erik Brown, the 27' modified cat boat’s main propulsion is wind. It also uses a 48V Torqueedo pod drive. Erik operates Left Coast Charters that focuses on getting people out on the water carbon-free.
Boat Name: Koru - The 24' Sloop was built by Casey Wilkinson who choose electric auxiliary power to reduce both air and sound pollution in the water. He is also planning to add solar cells to charge the battery.
Boat Name: Poulsbo Boat - NWSWB Instructor Tim Nolan and many students get credit for converting this 16' classic Poulsbo boat from diesel to electric propulsion.
Boat Name: Seawitch - A 29' Sloop reconditioned by Adam Pratt who removed a non-functioning, leaking smelly palmer 4-cylinder and replaced it with an electric inboard which he built.
BUSINESS & ORGANIZATIONS
Longship Marine, Poulsbo, WA - A used and consignment marine supply store in Poulsbo, WA. They aim to keep boating affordable and with no or low embodied carbon for marine goods, support local craftsmen and craftswomen, and to keep valuable materials and products out of the landfill through resale. Aaron and Nico, the co-owners, work daily “for the love of boat
NW School of WoodenBoats, Port Hadlock, WA - The school is dear to our hearts because 45 or so of her students plus their instructors built our boat in 2006 and ‘07. This award is for their sustained efforts to continue the traditions of renewable wooden boat construction as well as pioneering the expansion of a boat building curriculum into modern, green marine systems.
NW Maritime Center, Port Townsend, WA - Though it’s not the middle of the Inside Passage, The NW Maritime is very much the center of boat action here. Newly added sailboat races, AK2K and Seventy48 have brought attention to the pleasures of boating motor-free! These races added to their already inspired programs of education, hands-on skills training, rentals, and festivals.
Inside Passage Decarbonizers
The Inside Passage Decarbonization Project recognizes individuals and businesses that take action by using, enabling, and/or educating others of alternative clean vessel propulsion and lubrication that dramatically reduces carbon in the Inside Passage marine ecosystem.
Let your free streamer fly - Inspire others to follow your early lead! Join the Decarbonizer clean water prosperity community, display your engagement in climate and clean water action, and call attention to the decarbonizing steps you have taken. Be rewarded for your efforts and receive an honorary, bright yellow mast streamer for your efforts in taking substantial action to decarbonize the Inside Passage marine ecosystem. Let us tell us your decarbonizing story here.
NOTE* There is no annual fee to participate as a Decarbonizer. Award winners receive a specified set of benefits for events, programs and activities. Decarbonizers are also encouraged to consider a Decarbonization Project Partner level that is commensurate with their intended level of participation. A Decarbonization Project Partner is permitted to use our name and logo for marketing purposes.
